Being a UK soul singer with a touch of nostalgia, it’s easy to compare Lynda Dawn with Sade, but with a gospel upbringing, Lynda Dawn’s work owes as much to US heroines like The Jones Girls, Anita Baker, Regina Belle and Stephanie Mills. The sheer power of her voice imposed itself in the most graceful way possible on the latest Brownswood Bubblers compilation with ‘Move’, one of the standout soul tracks of the year. Her follow-up debut EP, on Mndsgn’s AKASHIK RECORDS, explores the full breadth of her Pentacostal vocal training, with production from Al Dobson Jr going from the synth heavy post-disco sound of Kashif at its most energetic, down to the smooth calm of Night Over Egypt-era Kenneth Gamble. The presence of the latter feels particular strong on today’s premiere, ‘Any Way You Want’. At First Light offers something new and exciting for trans-Atlantic soul, with just the right amount of reverence to the sound’s heritage.
The EP is out now and available from Bandcamp.
