There are just three days to go before this year’s festive chart-topper is unveiled, and We Built This City – the novelty charity release – was No2 in yesterday’s midweek update; less than 1,000 combined sales behind leader Ava Max’s hit Sweet But Psycho. Ariana Grande’s thank u, next followed at No3. Now, it seems punters are rushing to put money on in the British blogger leapfrogging Max by the end of the week.
Coral have slashed his odds down to 2/1, just a hairline behind joint favourites Max and Grande.
The two popstars are on 5/4, while Baby Shark is now way out at 25/1 after showing at No37 in yesterday’s midweeks.
“This is one of the tightest races we have had for the UK Christmas number one single in many years and the latest market support has been behind LadBaby whose had its odds collapse in the last 24 hours on the back of a surge of bets,” said Coral’s John Hill.
However, it’s been pointed out that LadBaby is actually fairly unlikely to land the No1 spot.
The track remains No1 on the UK iTunes charts, but has had hardly any support whatsoever on streaming services – which now make up a huge part of the composition of the charts.
In fact, the song was not in the Top 200 on Spotify in the UK over the weekend.
Plus, as BBC News pointed out, yesterday’s midweek update – which positioned LadBaby less than 1,000 copies behind Ava Max – did not include Sunday data from Spotify, Apple Music or Amazon; on which Max and Grande are both soaring. The Official Charts Company counts 100 premium audio or video streams as one sale; and 600 free or ad-supported audio or video streams as one sale.
Still, the blogger is putting up a strong fight, and all for a good cause.
In a statement yesterday, he wrote: “Who would have thought it? A sausage roll song being sung by a Nottingham lad would be sitting at Number 2 in the Official midweek Singles Chart?!
“What a fantastic achievement and great START… but let’s not stop there!! Let’s pinch that Number 1 spot from the global mega stars, eat our own body weight in sausage rolls AND most importantly raise even more money to support the amazing UK food banks charity Trussell Trust this Christmas!
“UK…I BELIEVE IN YOU, WE CAN DO THIS!!!!”
The Christmas Number One will be announced at 5:45pm on Friday, December 21.
